Originally, the term Bronze Age meant that either copper or bronze was being used as the chief hard substance for the manufacture of tools and weapons. In , John Evans recognized that use of copper often preceded the use of bronze, and distinguished between a transitional Copper Age and the Bronze Age proper. He did not include the transitional period in the three-age system of Early, Middle and Late Bronze Age, but placed it outside the tripartite system, at its beginning. He did not, however, present it as a fourth age but chose to retain the traditional tripartite system. The phrase was never intended to mean that the period was the only one in which both bronze and stone were used. The Copper Age features the use of copper, excluding bronze; moreover, stone continued to be used throughout both the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The part -litica simply names the Stone Age as the point from which the transition began and is not another -lithic age. After several years, a number of complaints appeared in the literature that “Eneolithic” seemed to the untrained eye to be produced from e-neolithic, “outside the Neolithic”, clearly not a definitive characterization of the Copper Age.

Most jewelry book authors tend to consider anything dating before the s as antique. Costume jewelry is usually defined as beginning in the s, although this is a bit misleading. It is true that cheap, disposable jewelry meant to be worn with specific outfits or costumes began to appear in great quantities in the s.
I was going through some of my books on vintage costume jewerly today and I thought everyone might like some information on one of the most highly sought after designer even today Marcel Boucher is considered by most including myself to be the most imaginative designer of quality costume jewelry. His early enamel pieces are bold, wonderfully executed and even today is sought out by collectors from all walks of life including movie stars like Sarah Jessica Parker.
Each one is a little “work of art”. He started Marcel Boucher Ltd. He was born in Paris, France where he designed for Cartier. He then came to work for Cartier in the U. In he worked for Mazer Bros until he opened his own business. You will find two marks on his jewelry that can help you in dating some pieces.
Runaway spending, toxic investments and poor accounting can burn through a lucrative windfall in next to no time. Yet there is surprisingly little written about the company, and almost nothing about the other products it marketed. In more than photographs, this book chronicles Eisenberg’s beginnings in clothing fashion and follows the trajectory of its revered jewelry line, as well as documenting its often overlooked fragrances and cosmetics.
With stories of the people and companies that were integral to this label’s success, this book shows that, in its golden years, the company’s creations deserved the place they held in only the finest stores. I found the book poorly organized. Sterling items were spread throughout the book instead of all being found in the chapter subtitled “The Sterling Years”. In the Sterling chapter, you’ll find non-sterling pieces and non-sterling ads.
I would have preferred the book be organized by Eisenberg Division so the jewelry was continuous. There were sufficient examples from the 40s but the 50s were not represented well other than in ads. The images are average quality and there are generally no back pics; no estimated values. The dating of some “Source unknown” ads is not precise i.
Since the book title states s to s, why is there an ad on pg. The book has incorrect attributions one of which is on pg 46 figure 2. Those are Mazer earrings and can be verified by several retail ads. A picture of the back would have shown whether there’s a “Script E” marking or a stone setter’s letter as my earrings have.
